TRAILER WHEEL BEARINGS – REPACKING OR REPLACING - Kevin Farrell

Summer is approaching and its time to dust off the trailer and carry out some basic maintenance, especially to wheel bearings.

Boat trailer wheels are often submersed and require particular attention.
It’s better to check, repack and/or replace wheel bearings before you go on holidays rather than losing a wheel on the highway.

To begin, jack up your trailer and check for any play in the bearing. Turn the wheel and listen for any grumbling sounds. Remove hub and hubcap. Pull out the split pin, take off the nut and pull the hub gently forward and back to expose the washer and bearing – separate for cleaning.

Take off hub. If re-using oil seal, remove it gently. Remove grease and de-grease. Replace bearings and racers. Cover bearing rollers and hubs with grease. Reassemble, pack bearing with grease and replace tyre.
