At some stage as a parent you will find yourself accommodating a rabbit or
guinea pig. Monte shows us how to build a simple pet hutch.
You will need Pine Framing, Hardiplank, Chicken wire, Galvanised Staples, Butt
hinges, Phillips head wood screws, Slide bolt, Flat sheet nails, Aluminium
flyscreen, and Cement sheeting.
For all the details download the Mitreplan – “Build a Pet Hutch” at
www.mitre10.com.au , or pick up a copy from your local Mitre 10 store.
Cutting the side angels is the tricky part. You’ll need to draw out the end
shape of the hutch on a piece of flat board – the same board you use for the
roof.
Once the lengths are cut, assemble the base. Screw the two longer lengths to the
cross members – put the sides in place, fastening at the base first, put the top
rail in place and secure. Screw in the ends.
To attach the chicken wire, start at the base and staple the wire around the
frame in one piece. Cut and staple chicken wire to the front door frame.
Now fix the Hardiplank cladding to the sides of the nesting box, starting 20mm
from the bottom of the base frame. Allow about 45mm cover on each sheet. This
should bring the top sheet flush with the top of the frame. Cut a strip of
Hardiplank to cover the gap between the two top sheets, fix and seal.
