Water conservation has become an important issue and many people are now
installing rain water collection tanks to supplement or replace town water.
Bushman tanks are strong and sturdy, come in a variety of shapes, sizes and
colours. They’re made of food grade polyethylene, which means it won’t taint the
water.
The tank needs to be placed underneath a gutter runoff. A solid and level base
is crucial. Monte builds decking from treated pine, so it will raise the tank
high enough to place a bucket underneath. He treats the end of the pine with an
end sealer.
Some special guttering needs to be placed. A transition piece is required to
take the diversions from the rectangular guttering into the round. To fix the
plastic piece to the metal, Monte uses Selleys Roof and Gutter Silicone Sealant
for a nice tight seal. Running a bead along the external part of the join is
also a good idea. Fix all the PVC joins using plumbers cement.
Bore out the hole for the tap. If you’re planning on using the tap for watering
the garden, Bushman Tanks can recommend and supply a Marina pump. It will take
the pressure up to mains pressure; it’s a plug in so you don’t have to get an
electrician to wire it.
