There are always little maintenance jobs around the house that need to be done.
Here’s a classic example: the gaps that develop around window frames
particularly in older buildings. These gaps can lead to all sorts of problems.
Rain, dust and insects can get in and, of course, they don’t look good.
You can fix this problem using a good quality sealant. You might get somewhat
confused by the huge selection of sealants available in hardware stores. Buy one
that you can paint over and that can be used for the exterior of a house.
First clean up the area around the window frame to remove any loose bits of
dirt, dust particles and old paint. This is easily done by running a scraper
through the edges around the window.
After cleaning and before applying your silicone sealant put some masking tape
along the edges both on the wall and on the window frame to ensure a nice clean
sealant edge once finished.
We chose a top quality sealant - Selleys Paint Over Silicone Sealant. It will
make your job easy too, and it will last longer.
- Insert the sealant into the caulking gun. Work in an upwards motion
applying steady pressure to make sure the sealant gets right into the gaps.
- Once the sealant is in place use a tool, such as a scraper, to smooth it
- Dip the scraper into some water and run it along the edge to create a
smooth finish. This needs to be done immediately after applying the sealant.
Don’t allow the sealant to begin curing, or you risk ripping out the sealant
when you remove the tape.
- After you have peeled off the tape give the sealant a couple of hours to
form a skin before painting it.
Another easy job around the house that you can do yourself with one of the
many quality products from Selleys....
