When you work with melamine board (the material that kitchen cabinets are typically made from), the easiest edging to use is iron-on vinyl.

Set your iron to “dry” (no steam) and “wool” (about medium). Use slight pressure on the iron, and then press the edging on hard with a block of wood. Work on about a half a metre at a time.

And here’s a tip from Kev that might save your life:

Don’t borrow your partner’s really good iron. You’ll damage it and it may well be thrown at you!
